Beyond the fence: An animal rights manifesto for film |
Stephen Marcus Finn |
This paper proposes a ground-breaking animal rights manifesto for film, particularly with regard to farmed animals. In contextualizing the Film Animal Rights Manifesto (FARM), the horrifying history of the portrayal of animals in film will be given, followed by a discussion of animal rights documentaries as well as of narrative films, including the 1936 Be Human, two on Animal Farm, Charlotte`s Web, Korova/The Cow, Babe, Chicken Run, Madanguel Naon Antak/Leafie – A Hen into the Wild, and Okja. The focus will then switch to the new manifesto that will be informed by the anti-establishment, anti-imperialist and revolutionary cinema of liberation manifestos, applying them especially to the portrayal of farmed animals in film. The conclusion will present the Film Animal Rights Manifesto, the first of its kind to be promulgated in detail. |
