Martin Smedjeback holds a bachelor`s degree in psychology and is a longtime animal advocate and nonviolence trainer. He is currently running the crowd-funded project, A Year for the Animals. This project enables him to focus on animal advocacy full-time, through education and activism. In March-April he served his fourth prison sentence for civil disobedience actions, this time for an open rescue of eight hens. In 2014 he received the Swedish Martin Luther King award for his work for nonviolence and against the weapons industry.
