Although having campaigned in several countries for the rights of the oppressed (including blacks, women, gays, and animals), Stephen Marcus Finn is generally known as an academic, a novelist, playwright, and poet. A professor of English with a doctorate in communication, he started his working career as a farm laborer and entertainer, before becoming a journalist, teacher, academic, and writer. He has been a vegan for decades and aims much of his public-speaking and writing on animal rights at young people. He is heavily involved in the worlds of classical music, avant-garde theatre and cutting edge art in South Africa. His wife, children, and mother-in-law, who are all vegans or vegetarians, are also involved in human, animal, and environmental well-being. He works closely with Beauty Without Cruelty (South Africa) and is a founding member of Speak! (Society for People, Environment and Animal Kindness).
