Building a national coalition for farm animals in Mexico: The CODAM model

PRESENTATION

Room A + online

Mexico has a vibrant and growing animal protection movement, but organizations often work in isolation and face significant regional and political challenges. In response, advocates created the Confederación por los Derechos de los Animales en México (CODAM), a national coalition that now connects more than 350 organizations and independent advocates working for animals across the country.

We will explore how CODAM brings together groups working on diverse issues, from companion animals to wildlife protection, marine life, vegan outreach, and farm animal advocacy, to build stronger collaboration and a shared national strategy for animal protection.

The session will focus particularly on how the coalition structure helps strengthen advocacy for farm animals by connecting local activists, facilitating knowledge exchange between states, and creating opportunities for coordinated campaigns and policy work at both the state and federal levels.

Participants will gain insights into the practical steps, challenges, and opportunities involved in building a national advocacy network in a large and diverse country like Mexico. The presentation will also highlight lessons that may be useful for activists seeking to build stronger coalitions and collaborative strategies in their own regions.
