Necessity makes strange bedfellows |
How building alliances with the farming community is key for the liberation of farmed animals |
Kerri Waters |
Animal farmers have traditionally been painted as the arch-enemy of animal rights activists. Although the most unlikeliest of allies, they are facing the enormous challenge of climate change, a growing scientific body of evidence on the need for a plant-based food system, and massive disruption to the industry from meat alternatives and food tech. Downward price pressures and monopolization by giant agribusiness mean many are trapped in the same system, which oppresses and exploits the victims. Kerri outlines opportunities the reality of today`s meat and dairy industry offers to animal rights activists in achieving our goals collaboratively with people who have previously been a roadblock to progress. She will describe how her work in Animal Rebellion and other rights organizations has built relationships with movements and individuals that have radically different values but provide avenues for positive outcomes for animals. She`ll reflect on her experiences and how this is informing her PhD study and the creation of Viva! Farming. |
