PRESENTATION
Sunday, 05.09.2021   12:00-12:40  Central European Summer Time (CEST)   Room A
How to organize effective and ambitious non-violent direct action
James Ozden via Zoom

On Saturday 22nd of May, around 100 Animal Rebellion activists shut down all four McDonald`s distribution centers across the UK. With blockades lasting from 19 to 30 hours, we paralyzed the supply chain of the biggest fast-food chains in the world and a symbol of the animal and climate exploitation industries. We made it, so hundreds of restaurants had to close because they ran out of stock to sell. We then did this again just two months later, blocking the only burger factory McDonald`s has in the UK for 3 full days.

In this presentation, we`re going to talk about the need for high-stakes civil disobedience to win justice for animals, as well as how to pull off actions of this magnitude. Specifically, we`ll talk about organizing logistics, press, action design, and more for large actions. We will also offer insights from a direct-action campaign against McDonald`s that is happening over this summer.
