Understanding the subjective experience of pain and suffering in animals |
Stanislav Akopyan |
Currently, many people remain skeptical that animals have the same capacity to feel pain and suffer as humans do. In my presentation, I will explain why there is little to no reason for this skepticism. First, I will go over the similarities and differences between the phenomena of pain and suffering. Then, I will argue that all vertebrates and at least some, if not all, invertebrates have the capacity to experience the central component of subjective pain that is associated with these phenomena. To conclude, I will explain why, taking this information into account, the burden of proof is on the skeptic to justify how it could be that animals don`t feel pain or suffer. Since the capacity to experience pain and suffering is widely accepted as the condition that gives a creature moral standing, it`s crucial to the animal rights movement to have a clear understanding of the presence of these phenomena in non-human animals. |
