South Africa has one of the highest rates of intimate partner violence in the world. This violence is not isolated to violence against women in the home but includes both violence against children and companion animals. This presentation will focus on the intersection of violence in South African homes and suggest that domestic violence laws be developed to include companion animals. Furthermore it will be argued, that where there is harm against one victim in the home, a truly nuanced understanding of this "triad of violence" could potentially prevent harm against other victims (which includes companion animals).
