Animals` Rights: address the gap to achieve the United Nations` Sustainable Development Goals
Katya Burns

My presentation critiques the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from an animal rights perspective, and presents a strong argument for incorporating animal rights into global development and human rights programming. The presentation will introduce the salient SDGs and will show how lack of attention to animal rights, and in particular, to the global proliferation of industrial animal agriculture and the associated rise in meat consumption in developing countries, critically impact progress towards the SDGs, particularly SDG #2, "End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture," SDG #6, "Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all," and SDG #15, "Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss." Specifically geared to animal rights activists and organisations, my presentation will provide clear and practical strategies that animal rights activists and organisations can use to directly interact with, and impact global development discussions, in order to effectively interject a much needed discussion of animal rights and veganism into high-level multi-lateral policy-making processes.
