Luísa Bastos

Luísa BastosLuísa Bastos is the animals in science program leader at Eurogroup for Animals since September 2017. Previously, she was an assistant researcher at the Institute of Research and Innovation for Healthcare, and was an invited assistant professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, where she investigated the impact of animal and animal-free science in healthcare. Her advocacy for animals grew to focus on animals in science and education, at national and international levels. She has been an animal rights advocate in a political party, NGOs, and other informal civic platforms. She co-organized the first and second International Conferences of Alternatives to Animal Experimentation in 2013 and 2015. She also participated in successful campaigns in Portugal to end the use of wild animals in circuses, to end public funding of bullfighting, to stop the construction of a national laboratory animal house with commercial purposes, among others. She holds a doctorate degree in Biomedical Engineering.
