The evil empire of animal agriculture in Brazil
Social, environmental, and ethical aspects
Paula Brügger

Meat and other animal-derived products are causing severe environmental and social impacts, and a myriad of ethical concerns regarding both human and non-human animals. This presentation aims at showing how these dimensions are inextricably linked, in Brazil, to political and economic hegemonic forces that legislate on their own behalf forming an evil empire of "Beef Power". Although the Brazilian Constitution harbors a principle of non-retrogression, many new laws and amendments challenge this norm causing immense social, ethical and environmental damage. This is why a critical non-speciesist environmental education – that encompasses ethics as a dimension of sustainability – is urgently needed.
