Alternatives to animal experiments in higher education: A film and an international campaign
Nick Jukes

This film presentation and discussion address the replacement of dissection and animal experiments in higher education. It explores the innovative, humane methods – alternatives – that are now widely available and increasingly implemented for university medical, veterinary, and biology education. The film focuses on veterinary education, specifically canine surgery training, using an advanced synthetic model. It explores the development and implementation of this alternative, along with footage of student practical classes. Forthcoming episodes in the film series will address other disciplines, and each showcases colleges at the forefront of progressive change. By illustrating the feasibility of 100 % replacement, and the advantages of alternatives, the film series and its associated resources can support the transition to a fully humane education. Material is being translated and distributed directly to universities and campaigners to help achieve the complementary objectives of better education and animal rights.
