The animal rights movement: our main challenges and how to overcome them
Jamie Harris

The impact of the animal advocacy movement is limited by a number of factors. One key challenge is funding, especially for non-western countries with large animal agriculture industries, such as China and India. Even with the funding we have, the animal rights movement faces tough decisions about where to spend this money. Another challenge is a lack of specific types of expertise, particularly management and leadership, fundraising, and government and policy expertise. After drawing on research conducted by Sentience Institute, Animal Charity Evaluators, Animal Advocacy Careers, and others to outline the challenges that the animal rights movement faces, I will argue that we can – and must – try to tackle these issues directly. I will highlight some examples of work that is being done currently, and make some suggestions for further work that is needed.
