PRESENTATION
Sunday, 11.09.2016   12:00-12:50   Room A
The construction of attitudes towards animals on the example of the Estonian fur industry
(a critical animal studies research project)
Kristina Mering

This presentation focuses on the construction of attitudes towards animals on the example of the Estonian fur industry. It is based on my final thesis in sociology. My aim was to find out how the construction of attitudes towards animals occurs in the daily work of the fur industry. In addition this research touches upon the topic of attitudes towards different animals (why is it accepted to raise and kill foxes for fur but not dogs?) and also how sentient beings are placed into the context of industrialized production (how far-reaching is the acceptance of using animals to gain profit?). The research is situated in the social constructivist paradigm and the theoretical background draws on the perspectives of sociological animal studies and critical animal studies. I conducted in-depth interviews with the representatives of the fur industry (fur farmers, owners and workers of fur shops, furriers etc) which form the base of this presentation.
