DISCUSSION
Saturday, 10.09.2016   16:00-16:50   Room C
Big picture strategy for an animal-free food system
Jacy Reese

This discussion will tackle some of the big questions that face the farmed animal advocacy movement, such as "Should we focus on changing individual consumption or institutions and social norms?" and "Is confrontation effective?" Jacy will introduce the topic by sketching out the different types of evidence we have available and helping the audience decide which questions are most important to discuss. The group will then contribute and vet additional evidence such as, "X social movement (which seems similar to the farmed animal advocacy movement) was very successful by using confrontation," or "Focusing on institutions and social norms might make people less defensive than focusing on individual consumption because they don`t feel judged or blamed." The discussion will wrap up with a look at all the evidence accumulated to see if we can make some meaningful conclusions. Please remain open and skeptical during this discussion and accept the possibility that you could change your mind based on a new look at the evidence.
