Meta-strategies: Why you can save many more animals with your wallet than with your plate

Meta-strategies go "one level up" – they first improve our capacity to help with greater leverage later on, instead of helping directly. One such that can multiply out impact is "earning to give": earning money not in order to get rich, but in order to donate as much as possible. Studies suggest that a mere $1000 – when donated to effective vegan advocacy – can create one additional vegan and thus saves about 10,000 animals. Since most of us can donate $1000 many times over during our lives, our wallets have the potential to save many more animals than our plates. In addition to the vegan food norm, the animal rights movement should systematically promote a donation norm, too. Addressing our chronic lack of funding is critical to the success of our movement. The current situation is such that many activists would like to promote animal rights full-time but cannot afford doing so for financial reasons. We can address this pressing problem by establishing "earning to give" as a crucial form of activism, too.
