Speaking truth to power
Recognizing the dominant, animal-eating narrative for personal and political empowerment
Melanie Joy

In this workshop, we expand the concept of carnism – the ideology that conditions people to eat animals – to explore the fictitious stories promoted by the dominant, animal-eating culture. In particular, we examine the ways carnism shapes vegans` perceptions of themselves, other vegans, non-vegans, and the vegan movement in attempt to repress vegan power. We also examine how carnism distorts non-vegan`s perceptions of vegans and veganism. Understanding these invisible yet powerful mechanisms of carnism can significantly empower vegans and the movement.
